Tree description: Also known as Amla or Indian gooseberry,  gooseberry plants are spiny shrubs with a sprawling growth habit ranging from 3-5 feet tall and wide. Gooseberries are low in calories and high in fiber, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. They are especially high in vitamin C and are also a good source of zinc and vitamin E. They require 8 hours of direct sunlight and are happy with afternoon shade. The fruiting season is June-July and can produce within 1-3 years, although an abundant crop should not be expected until the tree is well established.

Scientific name: Ribes uva-crispa

Family: Rosaceae

Origin: Native to many parts of Europe and western Asia.

Distribution/history: Cultivation of gooseberries was first recorded in history dating back to the 13th century in Europe. Gooseberries were introduced to northern America in the early 1800s and there are about 50 native gooseberry species in the U.S., including the American gooseberry. There was a temporary ban by the federal government in the early 1900s of gooseberry due to its susceptibility to carry white pine blister rust, which is a fungal disease that is deadly to white pines but does not directly affect gooseberry.
